A '91 CE will be Dragon I's won't it? Or is that loaded with Chainsaws I think they were called?
I think they may be HFS & Vintage Bass on a '91 CE. The Dragons came out a little later, I think. I quite like the muted high-end in their pick-ups. They overdrive very smoothly. A PAF-style HB in the bridge position can sound too spiky to me. When the amp is dialled in correctly to eliminate this, the neck pick-up can start to sound 'tubby'. Most PRS set ups seem to avoid this.

I've had some work done some on my PRS CU24 (1989 with 5-way rotary and sweet switch). Sound-wise, it never really worked for me. I swapped out the original pickups (HFS/Vintage) for some Dragon II's thinking they would improve the cleans as I liked the way they sounded on a friend's CU22, but they didn't. I kept the bridge Dragon as I liked the overdrive sound but swapped out the neck for a Lollar Imperial (low wind - makes a difference). Things improved but still not enough for me to call up Stratty/funky sounds so a couple of months ago I changed the 5-way rotary to a 3-way, the sweet switch for a push/push coil split and tone control and the guitar is now where I want it to be. Really good single coil and funky sounds on all positions and nice, classic sounding humbucker sounds, all easy to select and get to. Ergonomically, the 3 way and push/push coil-splitter makes sense and I'm not missing the clunk of that 5-way when you made a selection.

I think ICBM mentioned in another similar post, when you do this coil-splitting mod, you do lose something from the original, smooth PRS volume taper but it's not bothering me.

Note: you can source good parts for the electrics mod and do it for a fraction of the price of the PRS kit (£65). Charlie Chandler did mine using Neutrik etc as I'm a bit kak-handed when it comes to that stuff and a 20+ year old guitar has just come back to life.
I also believe it's reversible process too (just a slightly wider route = 1-2mm for the tone control.

I use custom 22's and singlecuts a lot and have chucked the standard Prs pickups. I use Suhr Aldrich pickups in them all. Except the one with 57/08's.

Also, I used to frequent the Seymour Duncan board many years ago. It was known that at the time you could get a double cream pickup made at the SD custom shop, but it had to have a cover over it and I think it couldn't have a logo. No idea if they still do this, but a few forum members claimed to have them made this way.
