    Default Gibson neck profiles...

Are there any particular measurements that separate a 50s neck from 60s neck etc?

Here's the thing, I'm after another Gibson and trying to decide what neck suits me best. For reference I've got my Fat Neck 335 which is massive and my SG Classic which feels quite slim by comparison. My mate's SG Standard sits somewhere between the two.

My 335 is supposedly based on a 59 so from that I'm assuming the SG Classic is more of a 60s neck but not sure where that leaves the Standard. Is the Fat Neck excessively fat and the Standard a more typical 50s neck? Or are 60s necks slimmer than the Classic? I haven't played any other Gibsons for a fair while so that's all I've got to go on atm.

Fwiw my order of preference for those three is 335, Standard, Classic (fattest to thinnest) but I'd probably be happy with any of those three.

The neck on a fifties Gibson guitar (let's say a 52 to 56 LP) is nicely rounded and hand filling but not in any way huge.

The neck specifications for the Historic R4 to R8 guitars were taken from a 50's Les Paul
Unfortunately, the guitar measured was in a Cartoon.

I have 3 custom shop Historics ( 1 R7 and 2 59 es335's ) the neck profiles on those are close enough to my 50's Gibsons for me.
The memphis built 335 and 339 with "50's necks that I've played ( this will include your fat neck ) are huge compared to real 50's necks.

With any Gibson ALWAYS do an in hand appraisal, there are some real peaches out there but for that money you must be sure that it is what you want.

SG necks are a bit odd and don't quite fit into the 50's/60's thing.

The 61 RI has a 60's Slim Taper pretty much, then the Classic, Standard and Special all get progressively bigger until Special's neck is HUGE-bigger than the 50's neck you see on non-CS LPs.

Of all the Gibson necks I can remember, the order would be roughly:

    R7 (biggest)
    SG Faded Special
    ES-339 50's neck
    2002-spec LP Standard 50's neck
    Flying V Faded
    SG Standard
    SG Classic
    ES-335 regular production
    CS-336
    2002-spec LP Standard 60's
    Gothic Explorer (skinny)

My 2001 335 dot RI has a medium-size neck, the 2004 137 is slightly thicker, the 72 SG Deluxe slightly thinner. My chum has a 'slim neck' (72?) 335 which is just silly thin, but he loves it.
Nasty, brutish and slightly above average height
