    Default Beginner finger style books..?

    Hi guys,

I've just bought my first acoustic (I've been playing electric for a while now), and have hardly ever played acoustic guitar before. I was just wondering if anyone knew of any good books that can take me up to a decent standard of finger picking technique wise?

    Thanks a lot,
    Greg

Fingerpicking is a great satisfying style to learn, there are loads of Youtube vids etc as well as books and DVDs. if I can pass on one tip though. Alternating Bass, every finger picker will eventually come across this, I remember trying to learn this method when I was learning a piece called 'Vestapol', I just couldn't keep this alternating pattern between the E and D string going while playing different patterns on the other strings at the same time. Then someone told me to treat each strike of the E and D string as either a single note or a multiple note with the other strings! Such a simple solution that I didn't think of at the time....Doh!, but now its one of my favourite styles and I actively seek out tunes to learn with alternating Bass. John Denver was a prime example, a lot of his fingerstyle alternating bass playing was so melodic that a lot of them can be played as instrumentals. Another great tune to learn is 'Streets of London' by Ralph McTell, many great Guitarists have said that this was one of the first tunes they ever learned. It has almost every fingerpicking style included and you can always throw in something a little extra if you want, its a great versatile tune to learn and will give you a great foundation for fingerstyle.
I doubt, therefore I might be!

+1 on what midnightminstrel says. there are some standard folky fingerpicking patterns for the right hand (assuming that your not some kind of lefty) such as travis picking - get this into your hands and you are well in for lots of simon and garfunkel and other type folkie stuff
