    Default School Me Metalheads

I gather from the resurgence of heavy thread that much of the contemporary metal that someone who is not a genre specialist might be exposed to is total balls and there is a lot of good metal that is not promoted.

So school me metalheads tell me of this metal!

Just to give you some background. I used to be very into metal in the 90's, but lost interest when Nu-Metal appeared and never bothered to get back into it. My favourite bands at the time were: Sepultura, Machine Head, White Zombie, Fear Factory, Pantera and RATM. On the more classic front I'm also a big fan of Maiden and Sabbath.

I should mention I have a fairly low tolerance for screaming and grunting heavy vocals (a bit is fine)

Judging by your tastes there's a very real possibility you may like none of these, but these are just a few bits of what's rocking my shit at the moment.

I'm not a huge Priest fan, but mainly that's down to their old drummer who sounds like he wanted to be in Status Quo rather than a metal band. As a result Painkiller is the only album of theirs I really like.

I have a lot of time for Rob Halford.

How about these chaps. I like the feeling of movement in this track, if those are the words I'm looking for. It's a cool video too, if you like zombies, "hot chicks" and men with beards.

    Thanks for those Bidley

Of those tracks the only one that really pricked my ears up was Baroness who I'm going to be checking out. I think I like them because of their proggy post rock leanings.

That Death album is fantastic (thanks for reminding me of it), but it's clearly cheating as I wanted contemporary.

I'll add one more thing to the list of metal things I don't like. Cheesy goth keyboard pads. Seems to be a very common feature these days.

Have you tried Arch Enemy? Technically, you could call what Angela does a death metal growl, but the higher register of her voice is much easier to listen to. You can also understand what she is screaming about! * I'm not a fan of all the grunting and squealing either, but I love this band. The music is killer, too- there's a lot of talent in that band.

I particularly like all the melodic interludes and instrumentals they do.

Not a fan of Cookie Monster or screaming vocals myself, so aside from the classics like Maiden, my Metal tastes only really stretch to :

    Mid-to-latter era Soulfly
    Lamb of God
    Down

That's cool. The Red Album is superb, and their last two are pretty good as well. They're a bit heavier, but you may like Crowbar (not contemporary, but you may not have heard of them).

In Metal terms, if it came out after 1995, it's contemporary But seriously, everyone should listen to that album.
