Top of my list for modern stuff fitting these vocal requirements is Protest The Hero's Scurrilous Album. Really good fun rock with some incredible musicianship. Sex Tapes is the best track for guitar work, but this is probably my favourite song on the album.

Evergrey are another band with good vocals and riffs, but I'll warn you there are some keybaords in their tracks. They often have a good groove to their riffs IMO.

    Evergrey - Touch of Blessing

I like the Young Guns album 'All Our Kings Are Dead'. Really like the singer, and the production is slick.

    Young Guns - Stitches

Proggy Post Rock? I think this stuff is Proggy Post Rock, but I'm crap at genres. Not metal, but you might like some of it. This is my favourite genre of stuff these days.

    Circa Survive - Living Together

Tides Of Man - Not My Love 2

    Saosin - Voices

Closure In Moscow - Kissing Cousins

    Dredg - Bug Eyes

Hope you enjoy some of it.

Edit: How are you guys embedding so many videos? I'm not allowed any more than one.

Protest the Hero have all the things I dislike about modern 'Metal'. They sound like great musicians though.

I like everything except Chuckles and Mr Squeezy. Pariah and the Parrot and Catch Without Arms were good IMO, but very pop influenced. I will admit at this point I love pop music. You should check out the Circa Survive stuff, a lot of people who like one of Dredg/Circa tend to like the other. Circa are my favourite band, but some of their albums take a few listens. If you want some albums to check out On Letting Go and Blue Sky Noise are my favourites. On letting go takes a couple of listens, but is arguably their best. Blue Sky Noise is pretty easy to get in to in comparison.

I only like Scurrilous from Protest the Hero, I don't like their earlier albums. This track is worth listening to just for the guitars Protest The Hero - Sex Tapes

See, some passages were seriously great, but other parts just sound like a teeny High School Musical mock-up. The vocals are the worst though. IMO, of course.

Vocals tend to be the sticking point with a lot of rock/metal bands. The OP mentioned a lot of bands who had great groove in their riffs, Pantera, Machine Head etc, but also wanted to try and avoid too much screaming/grunting from singers. If I ignored the singer part I'd be recommending Decapitated. Super heavy, but loads of great groove. If you can get beyond some of the drumming and vocals a lot of the guitar work arguably has some of the same attitude Pantera had.

Decapitated - Poem About an Old Prison Man

    Decapitated - Day 69

And of course there is always Trivium. They get a lot of stick but I've got the whole discography and enjoy it all.

Some tracks with a good groove IMO -

    Trivium - In Waves

Trivium - Down From the Sky

Trivium - A Gunshot To the Head of Trepidation

Before you listen to anything else, you need some Grand Magus in your life. JB is one of the best voices in metal now and an incredible payer too.

Hammers Of Misfortune - Anything by John Cobbett is gold in fact
The Lord Weird Slough Feg/Slough Feg - like Thin Lizzy and Horslips played by Maiden
Pallbearer - incredibly heavy but very melodic. Think early Anathema and Cathedral meets Warning.
In Solitude - total Mercyful Fate worship.
The Devil's Blood - triple lead occult rock. Think Maiden meets Jefferson Airplane and Black Widow, covered in blood.
Torche - tuned down to A but with a a lower "bomb" string to hit occasionally. Heavy wall of noise sound live but with killer pop hooks.
Ghost - BOC meets Mercyful Fate via The Beatles.
Bullet - Swedish band that sound a lot like Accept
AH! I found the edit sig function. Hurrah!!

Oh, and my friends Orange Goblin are always good. Newest album is a career best and things are finally going well for them.
