Try some Orange Goblin, Down, Gentleman's Pistols, or Godsized for the rockier, doomier side. Try 3 Inches of blood or Huntress for a more classic Priest /Maiden sound. I've been listening to Sylosis and Arch Enemy this morning, slightly different vocal style which you may not be so keen on.

Don't forget a lot of older bands have released some epic albums over the last 18 months 2 years. Personally I would say the Heavy revival is (and has been) in full swing, not on the horizon like that newspaper article would suggest.

Good call, I totally didnt expect the singer to look like he does after just hearing the cd's too. He totally doesnt look like he should sound like that.

Okay, admittedly this is a bit grunty for your taste. But the vocals do vary from Cookie Monster to clean. But the music really is rather lovely. Fabulous progressive, heavy metal. Give it a go, you can always tell me it was rubbish once you've listened to it.

Edit: changed to a different track by same band

Yeah, they're a mixed bag...that track is possibly their most commercial and lighthearted.

    My favourite albums are:
    Blast Tyrant
    Robot Hive
    Beale Street
    Clutch

Funny thing, I only have the first Dawnbringer EP but dug it out last week for the first time in years.

Thanks for all the recommendations chaps I really appreciate it.

In my perusing of the more extreme side I came across Atheist. Apparently they are the only known Death Jazz (Jazzcore?) band.

Their albums are available in full on youtube. They are known for being completely insane and hard to listen too, but I'm actually quite enjoying it.

    EDIT:
    Listening report
Enjoyed Arch Enemy a lot. I always liked the less extreme end of Death/Grindcore (Especially Amotts masterpiece Heartwork) and great to hear some female metal vocals

The Opeth track was also pretty awesome. I'm going to have to do some serious listening to them as it looks like their output goes on a real journey.

Loved the riff in the Karnivool track. I'm from the groove metal era so that's right up my alley. Need to work out if I can get on with the nu metally vox

Devin Townsend was a pleasant surprise. Last time I listened to any of his stuff it was the Satans Ice Cream truck era of Strapping Young Lad. Good job he cut his hair. Looks like a total unit with the receding look.

Tesseract I was already a fan of (Yay I'm not completely out of touch!)
