    The first Atheist album has been one of my all time faves since the 80's.
    If you like them then obviously, Cynic come.to.mind. Sadus too, perhaps.
    For other techy thrash and death, Coroner from back then were great.
    Modern bands to check out include Portal, Stargazer, Absu, Diskord, and maybe we can push you as far as Deathspell Omega.

    I think there's some very strange ideas in this thread about what is considered 'metal'. I'm not saying there's anything wrong with these bands (for the most part, at least) but come on... Young Guns aren't really metal, nor are Circa Survive etc

    The farthest away from metal was probably Corsair and it wasn't even just that I thought they were shit, it wasn't even somewhat 'heavy' so I'd put that in the 'lame, whiney pop punk with overly fast drumming' bin with Blink182/+44 etc

    Some good stuff has been posted up here though...
