So what exactly are the challenges? is there a timeframe? I'm planning on throwing together some kind of superstrat this year, but it won't happen quickly.
Custom Tele • Customised JS100 • Fender Jazz V RH bass
    Status bass • Mojo strat • MIJ 62RI strat • Taylor 814CE
Paduak 12 string Chapman stick • inflatable sex doll

[r. The most important thing is to get a body sorted. Does anyone know the prospects of gluing up a blank from bits of pine from wickes? Sizes etc., or any other suggestions along that front? Also, would the archtop bridge be too high on a flat-top tele body?[/QUOTE]

Might be cheaper checking out these chaps

I'm not sure pine will be strong enough. Also the bits you get from DIY stores are unlikely to be square enough to joint easily.

Last time I bought some cheap bits of poplar from eBay - they were square enough to just glue and clamp and cost me about £20, I think. From memory you want something around 340x540mm and 45mmish thick.

I think that's the chap I got mine from. More recently I got a lump of unplaned Poplar from my local timber place for £13 that's big enough for two body blanks.

The rules we roughly through around earlier were:

    2 categories - below 100, and unlimited
    Finish by 31st March

Pretty sure that was about it Oh, normally anything you use from your bitsbox has to be accounted for using 'reasonable' prices. I'm going to suggest not including postage in accounting, as it'll slaughter anyone that doesn't have stuff lying around (i.e. me)

Indeed. My inclusion of "Phase 1" in the title isn't meant to be prescriptive - I'll change it some time in February and some time in March but let's not worry too much.

Agreed on the other things - account for what's in your bitsbox at a sensible rate, and postage doesn't count against the total. Nor do tools nor consumables (eg sandpaper, finishing oil). Or at least that's how I see it.

But I have started, ordering one of Warmoth's chambered, sculpted, not for real-men, Tele bodies.

Other parts in mind for the 'caster include a "superwide" neck, and a CC neck pick up.
There I go telling you my age
Note of caution re the CC be sure and email the company the dimensions as it's not the same as a standard p90 - then get them to confirm it back - I ended up routing one of my builds for the cc and lets just say it's a good thing it was relic'd

Picked a showcase body, for relative cost-efficiency. White finish helps me think of it as a blank canvas...........

Hmmm, looks like putting a tailpiece on a tele is more trouble than it's worth. Don't really want to do a 'normal' tele though, as I'd quite like it to have a jazzbox or gretsch vibe. Any suggestions?

Recessed tune-o-matic and a pair of Filtertrons? My build last year, apart from being Jag shaped, was pretty much that... didn't look much like a Grestch though!

Okay, I'll have a go at the "unlimited" one, which should cost me about £300 I think.

Plan is for a double-cutaway Les Paul style guitar (the treble side of a Les Paul mirrored) with a mahogany body, flat quilt maple top. It'll have 2 P-90 pickups and a wrapover bridge.
I think you'll find it's a bit more complicated than that.
