    Default I think I want a Blackstar HT1...

...having had a mooch around a few reviews and video demos, should be the amp for me - I'm based in the West Midlands and pretty bloody skinted, but if anyone's selling one around (or ideally under ) the £100 mark let me know!

Do it! They are fantastic, get the head with reverb and a cheap 8ohm 1x12 and you will be laughing.

Was thinking combo for cuteness and significant-other-pleasing, but if anyone's selling a head I'm listening too (could run it through my bass 4x10 for a bit if needs be).

Get the combo! It is still tiny but you also get a speaker too. Speaker is off when you run to a bigger cab, so you can use it like a head anyway when you need to. Actually the HT1 will output to 4, 8 or 16 ohms, so will work with pretty much any cab. This was a later revision in terms of writing on the amp/manual, but the early ones can still do it too.

They will run at 4,8,16 but sounds much better @ 8ohms for some reason.

Have you considered the Orange Micro Terror?

Hmmm, can't say I have as the band's got more of a Blackstar/Mesa sound than a Marshall/Orange sound and the main thing I need it for is writing; shall have a look at some demo-y things though, cheers Col!

    Son's got a Ht-1, I've got a Ht-5 (both heads). Personally I'd go for a HT-5 for the added EQ.

I also prefer the pre-reverb models, they were re-voiced when they released the 'mk2'.

The pre-reverb HT5 is different but I think the HT1s are the same. The with reverb HT5R has slightly more aggression and gain if I remember rightly from my experiences. I was auditioning an instrument a while back and tried it one weekend in to a HT5R mini stack. I came back the following weekend to see if I still liked it and plugged in to what I thought was the same amp (same stack/same position) but was the non R version and I couldn't get the gain channel to sound the same as what I'd remembered the week before. After asking the salesman he confirmed that the non R version does sound a bit different on the gain channel. I noticed the difference enough to remember from one week to the next, which either means it is noticeable or it means I've got a very picky ear. It isn't night and day I don't think, but I think I was getting more bite out of the R version with high gain.

I actually like just the HT1 as it is very quick to dial in and then you just get on with practicing/jamming, but if you want to tweak get the HT5 as you'll be happier with the separate EQs.
