Are you running the bass direct to the DI, and the guitar not (via a pedal or something)? Is the bass active?

It is true that old strings do sound dull, but it could also be an impedance issue, which is usually worse. If the bass is not active, try running through a pedal - ideally an EQ, but any buffered pedal (eg a Boss Tuner or any other Boss-type pedal) that's turned off will do.

I took up bass several years after picking up guitar and have kept both going. In a band I played guitar with a few years back the bassist had some wicked guitar skills so we swapped instruments for 5 or 6 songs and we sounded like a totally different band because of our different approaches. One thing I did notice when I took up bass is that I feel it made me a better guitarist because I learned how to support the bands sound more whether I was playing bass or guitar, but especially bass. Noel Redding, the original bassist for Jimi Hendrix was a guitarist first, the story goes that even though the audition was for bass he showed up hoping they could use another guitarist. They convinced him to try a few songs on bass and away he went....

I heard it slightly differently - that Chas Chandler asked Redding (who he already knew well) if he knew any bass players, and Redding seizing the opportunity said "yeah, I play bass too", was provisionally given the job... and went and bought his first bass on the way home .

That could be too, I have read that Chas Chandler had a lot to do with Jimi's first years in the spotlight.

well, no one involved in any of it is still around to confirm or deny. I was watching a Hendrix documentary the other night and they said Redding turned up expecting, albeit mistakenly, to audition as a guitarist for the Animals. He was asked if he could play bass and said he would give it a go.

they also said Mitch Mitchell was chosen over Ansley Dunbar on the flip of a coin.
