    Default Question for Axe-FX Users

Is tha Axe-FX II worth the price of the upgrade over an Axe-FX Ultra/standard. Given the current used prices there almost £1k different in price against a new AFX-II (obviously less against a used one, but there hard to find).

From what I've heard, with the FW9 (10 is just around the corner) it is. You should have come to the NE Guitar Show, you could have had a potter on mine, on a FRFR rig.

I've had an Axe-FX Standard in the past (twice!) just toying with getting one again and not sure if the additional expense is worth it.

Yeah, I know that you never really got on with them. How are you planning on using it, FRFR or another way?

It all depends on what you need. I've only heard an Axe II (never played through one) but I do have an Ultra and whilst it's very, very good, it's not as good as the II. I got a really good deal on the Ultra and my reasoning was that it was the top of the modelling pile before the II came out, was used by loads of pro's, top studios, etc. Had a Guitarist gold award, so how bad could it be?

I have a fair bit of experience with modellers (I've owned/own Pod, V-Amp, Tonelab, Sansamp, Various Rocktron boxes, GSP1101) and the Ultra is DEEP! The amp models are more realistic that any other modeller I've used (by miles) and the effects are stellar. It's fairly easy to get a decent sound out of it with minimal tweaking but once you start messing with stuff, it becomes a way of life. The Ultra is fine for my needs at the moment and I'm learning a lot about tweaking. I'll probably go for an Axe II at some point but I'm not really gassing for one at the moment.

If you can pick up an Ultra or Standard cheap then go for it. You'll probably get all or most of your money back on re-sale if you decide to upgrade to the II.

I'm not sure if I'm goin gto try FRFR this time or not. I think initially I'll just use it trough the power stage of my marshall, but I have a set of powered PA speakers so might try them and see how it sounds.

I've been looking around for prices on a Standard (more out of curiosity than anything), but I can't find any of the buggers for sale. Anybody got an idea how much they go for these days?

Axe FX prices seem to be a law unto themselves. I've seen used Axe II's on e-Bay with a BIN price higher than the new price from G66?!!!

When I was looking in the summer, Standards were going for around £900 and Ultras for £1100 - £1200. I got my Ultra from a guy on the Fractal forum for £850 so I was very pleased with that deal.

BTW - apologies to Si for the slightly patronising earlier post. We were all posting at the same time and I had no idea you'd owned a Standard in the past which made most of what I said completely redundant!

Hmmm...I'll probably give it a miss, then. In fact, at those prices second-hand I'm more likely to go for a new Kemper.
