    Default Odd little combo

    Larry, Luke, AND Sir Brian

Sir B seems to take a while to warm up.

Tone win by a mile goes to Larry !

Slaughters them ... he's from another plant called taste and tone. The other two were just embarrassingly bad. Brian is outside his comfort zone away from Queen ..

Larry Carlton is great tasteful player...the other two just seem bland to me..more rock than blues players..

I think this has some bearing on the Zep thread a few days ago.

You always have to take a player in context. A master of orchestration and written solos like May is always going to suffer in comparison to some one from a more improvisational background blues / jazz background like Larry.

Luke sounds to me like he is just looking for excuses to shoehorn big runs in.

    Exactly this.

I've never got the Lukather thing. He's a prolific session player but doesn't appear to have the ability to play the tasteful thing when he's not being told what to do.

Larry & Luke do a lot of gigs together, which may surprise a few. They just seem to enjoy each other's company & music. But this was just bonkers.

Completely agree with all of the above. And I'm not even a fan of Larry Carlton's normally - too 'smooth' and refined, I prefer more edgy and 'rock' - but I am a big fan of Brian May's work in Queen so I expected to think "nah... Brian is better". But no. He doesn't sound like himself at all - neither the style nor even the tone... derivative and horrible. Lukather is even worse if anything - that tapping bit in particular sounds amateurish, the rest is just a bit wanky, and it's all unworthy of someone I *know* can play, even though I'm not a big fan.

Carlton doesn't do anything particularly original but he just plays with musicality and tone where the other two don't.

in fairness it looks like carlton's gig and he has all his gear set up nicely, and is probably warmed up and on fire. Lukather tries to impress with a chopfest and sir BM is trying to play something different, whilst managing to look slightly uncomfortable. Interestingly lukather sounds like a good version of me trying (and probably failing) to impress with too many notes.
