I can't recall exact dial positions, but what I do is this: First I start with the gain and output at 12:00 and adjust the filter to get rid of the fizzy stuff and until I like the general quality of the sound. Then I switch the rat off and pay attention to the volume of the bare amp with my ears. Then I switch the rat back on and turn the output knob up or down until the volume matches the bare amp volume. Then, keeping the volume level constant, I sweep the gain/output knobs simultaneously in opposite directions until I find the amount of gain I want (i.e. when you turn the gain down you need to turn the output down, and vice versa, to keep the volume constant-ish). Finally, I add a touch more on the output knob to slightly goose the amp, and I'm done.

I really like my rat. It works great in front of both the clean and dirty channels of my amp.

Everything at 12:00 is nice with Tele neck pickups

Drive at 9, filter at 12 and volume to suit (usually ~2:00) is a nice overdrive, wind filter up or down to brighten/darken a bright/dark guitar, or cut through a band mix.

There are a lot of really good settings, and it's quite amp-dependent, but my two go-to settings are: (clock settings)

Dist 10, Filter 3, Volume 3 - heavy crunch 'overdrive'

Everything at 1:30 - bright aggressive distortion

That sounds about right to me.

Mine's an '88 RAT2 with the LM308(?) thingy if that matters?!

*edit* The controls have a very wide range and are quite powerful, go easy on them as there are some lovely subtle sounds within.

my mooer version is pretty teeny so i don't think it has been fed those

i generally set the distortion at about 10 o'clock (so it's obviously a distortion, but not too compressed or starting to turn into a fuzz), and then volume dependent on whether i'm using it over a clean tone or a dirty tone (if the latter i might dial in some boost, but that same volume setting would be too loud over a clean amp) and filter again dependent on amp and amp settings, probably around 1 o'clock or so, though.
