Yes you could go from the rack send through your effects then into a power amp.

I have EL34 power valves into my Ironheart IRT60H at the moment. It does make quite a bit of difference. The sound is more aggressive and raw. Whereas I found the 6L6 valves that came with it smoother. I actually preferred the clean channel with 6L6 in too. But either sounds good. I was just thinking of putting the 6L6 back in, just for a change.

Thanks for the reply. I am going to buy spares for my IRT120H at some point and will need to consider if I want 6L6 again or to try the EL34s. I am happy with the 6L6s but if I've got the budget I might well buy a set of each.

My only complaint about the series is that the amps look 'too metal', which is a shame because they're capable of so much more. Arguably I play metal, but I still prefer classic looking gear. I've been prompted to retolex the head in white to match my EVH412, which is only white because that was the only used one I could find. My bandmates prefer that cab to my V30 cab but I still prefer V30s myself. It does actually sound good with the greenbacks though. I do think the head would look cool with the black grill and white tolex, but I don't like spending money on cosmetics.

I know what you mean, the design is very aggressive. And the amp is much more than a metal amp, it boasts a real variety of tones.

It would be very easy to change the knobs and the front grill though.

The knobs are fine. They're very easy to see unlike the knobs on my Blackstar S104EL34 where I have to be right up next to them to see my settings.

I found a picture with white knobs, and I don't think I like them.

Yes it is the grill design I have the problem with, and the LEDs. If I could get hold of purple LEDs I'd like those though. The red is just a bit too cheesy and 'hell' like (which I think was the intention). In my current band the grill look fits though so I guess it will stay, but for my preferences I'd rather the amp just looked like a blacked out VH100R

I guess it would look similar to this in white tolex.

The LEDs are connected very simply. Which you can see if you take the front grill off. You can disconnect the little plug there. Or fit a different coloured strip. I've seen the amp with blue LEDs and that looks great, been thinking of doing that myself.

Thanks for the info. I'll take a look inside mine when I get a chance.

Just seen Laney discussing the rack on the Premier Guitar YT channel.

It seems that the USB is in and out. But when you want to re-amp you connect the dedicated re-amp send from the back to the guitar input on the front. I don't know why you can't do this with some internal switching, but anyway, it sounds like I can do what I want. Perhaps the send socket is there in case you want to re-amp with a different amp.

This posting introducing the Laney Ironheart Studio rack mounted amp has got me thinking. I like the compact size, power output switching, the ‘studio’ facilities including USB output, speaker emulated output, dummy load, phones connection and reasonable cost all tick a bunch of boxes for me.

Which brings me to my concern, and that is can this amp do a good clean tone? I get the impression that the Laney ironheart is geared up to be a high gain monster. (Demos seem to lean that way)

Can anyone tell me of their experiences with the Ironheart? I assume the conventional head models are similar tonally to the studio rack mounted version.

Depends on what you want from a clean tone. The 120h I have stays clean to rediculously loud, but if you want breakup on it you'd have to play with the wattage dial, as there is only a clean (master) volume and no pre gain control.

It sounds perfectly fine, if a bit lacking in sparkle. It surprised me, I thought it would be crap but it is very usable and none of my pickups distort it at high volume, but bear in mind I use PAF types and single coils

I guess it reminds me a bit of a DI signal with access to the EQ section, which makes sense as I think the clean channel was a last minute addition to the amp where it basically is the rhythm channel with the pre amp gain being removed from the signal (if you excuse my non technical explanation/understanding)
