Default Show us your self built amps

    Here's one of mine

Based on a JTM45 with a few tweaks, fixed bias 2 6V6's and about 20W

    Very nice chaps.
I am not brave enough to build an amp.

I know this would be me:

    Oooh! Can I play?

    Ax84 Firefly:

A similar circuit using sub-miniature valves & a voltage converter circuit to run off a 12V supply, inspired by the 'Superfly' on DIY Stomp-boxes. It's an exercise on what is possible, rather than what sounds good. I must re-visit it and try to improve it sometime...

I didn't particularly like the Firefly, so gutted it and designed a proper push-pull amp with a concertina phase inverter & a DC coupled cathode follower to try and get a little practice amp. It's so-so:

Bit of a rat's nest, though:

    Then there's this:

It started as an AX84 4-4-0; a 2 watt Trainwreck Express with a 6SN7 dual triode as the power valve. I really couldn't bond with it, an after much buggering about came to the conclusion that I really didn't like the sound of over-driven triodes (the buzz!!!). So I grafted in a couple of EL84s, which were switchable with the 6SN7. Louder, and with split-load resistors on the PI, it actually sounded OK, but still not *IT*. So I beefed up the output and power transformers, ditched the 6SN7 and put a couple of 6V6s in and made it a fully fledged TW Express. Now we were getting somewhere. Much more buggering about and I think it sounds quite good now. Its had a power control/vvr style voltage regulator in since the start, and with it, even with the 6V6s, the amp can be played at 'bedroom' levels, and still sound OK. It can be made *much* quieter than the 4-4-0, but still give 20W clean into 8ohm.

It bears the scars of 2 years worth of modifications and buggering about.

(Run out of images in this post now.....)

This is the guts of the last one when it was a 4-4-0 / EL84 hybrid:

Then there's my absolute favourite: ECC83->EF86->EL84 single ended with tremolo -> Celestion G10M. I originally started thinking about an amp of this sort after seeing the XITS X4, but it has been designed from scratch, and doesn't have much in common with the X4.

    (I've posted these photos before):

This is only about 4w, but sounds lovely at 'bedroom' levels, and is very house friendly.

The latest is this, which I think I've just about ironed the wrinkles out of. It's a ~30W solid state clean amp, with similar intent to the 44 magnum/ 22 caliber type things (but they are switching/class D, and this is linear - hence the fan!):

The insides: Ignore the melted bits, and it's a bit more crowded in there now, as I've added a pre-amp so it will take instrument, rather than line level signals.

If only I could play guitar competently...
