Default One Finger per fret..How high up?

    Hi guys.

I had a pretty sh*tty day on the guitar today. During the week, I have been practicing Major scale patterns, in any given key via the caged system, up and down the fretboard.

Question is: How high up the fretboard can you keep it to one finger per fret, with the major scale?

I am not counting Pentatonic as it's common to use fingers 1-3 or 1-4 or 1-2-3, if you get what I mean.

I'll give an example of G Major. When I get upto Position 5(E Natural Minor). I struggle with 1 finger per fret,BUT, If I do pos 1 in the upper register (15th fret) I don't struggle as much as I do with the Pos 5.

This may be down to the fact that I am more fluent with Pos1, I don't know. At some point though, I do find it a bit easier when up at the 15 fret and higher to use just 1-2-3 fingers.

I varies with which guitar I use also, the Wolfgang has a little better access to the higher register than my Strat type Guitar.

Another niggle is that I like to mix pentatonic with the relevant Major scale too, this requires readjusting the position of the thumb. Simple example is the thumb tends to come over the top on Pent most of the time and that does not always suit major scale phrases and patterns. I don't mind developing my own way, but sometimes you just have to do things the orthodox way to make it less painful.

Am I being overly paranoid about these things?

    Thanks.

We all get like that , sometimes I find my biggest advances in playing take place away from the guitar , just visualising things and overlaying chords and chord fragments etc . Its far too easy to get bogged down in the minutae of the mechanics , watch any vid of gary Moore SRV etc , no finger - fret going on there and yet it sounds fluid and rather nippy in places , just chill and soak up the sound of a guitar where the note is coaxed rather than mechanically forced out ,,,then have a beer

I've already had a few beers, it's all of a sudden less of a worry

Think of it this way. When I drag myself out of my pit at 10am tomorrow, I will feel like Shit from too much beer and you would probably be all cosy asleep in bed and wont wake up with a hangover. I think I may have to retire for the evening now

The first exercise Justin Sandercoe gave me in around 2004 was this "breaking the finger bonds" - I'd spent 10 years trying to be a shredder.

His take is one finger per fret is great learning the notes on the fretboard but it sounds sterile and incredibly limiting when used to try and create music. So the first exercise was breaking the finger bonds... sliding up and down to notes, bending to pitch all that stuff that creates dynamics in the playing.
