Basically I spent several years and lots of money trying various sets of pickups in my favourite les paul, to eventually discover that after a little maintainance the guitar sounded fantastic stock!!!

I put some Stormy Mondays on my es339 & I'm happy with them. I did try a pair of Peter Greens but I found them too nasally on a semi for my tastes.

They were standard fit in both my Jap Tokai's ( LS65 and LS75Q ) and they were really nice pickups. Certainly on a par with the Burstbuckers on the Les Paul I had at the time. I did swap them out of the LS65 to put in a matched pair of Catswhiskers but not because I wasn't happy with them. I just got a great deal on the CW's and thought I'd give them a try. I certainly wouldn't feel the need to swap them out again if I got another Tokai.

I did the reverse! Replaced the MKIIs with Seth Lovers in my Tokai ES120 (335 copy).

There was a slight difference but not a massive amount and I suspect a lot of it was me wanting the SLs to sound better!
It didn't cost much as I already owned the SLs but I would not be in a hurry to swap out Gotoh MKII PAFs in future. Of course, the eternal problem is that you never know if a pickup swap is worthwhile until you do it. On a 335 that's even more of a ballache than usual!

NB: I know that more recent Tokai PAF pickups have been much higher in output. Not sure if they are still branded "MKII" but I think they were made by another manufacturer. Might be worth confirming that they are the Gotohs.

Basher, I did the same with an Ibanez SA1260 Prestige. Got it for a song and it sounded fine with the V2, S1,V2 pickups but I convinced myself it needed a full Seymour upgrade. Bought them used, fitted them and couldn't tell the bloody difference so changed them back. I think sometimes we're guilty of looking for the mythical God tone and get a bit carried away. On the subject of God tone, I've never tried the Seth Lovers but they certainly get the thumbs up from a lot of guitarists. Back on the subject of the mk ii PAF's, I have seen a few reviews where people complained they were prone to microphonics but I certainly never experienced that.
