To achieve this high speed travel our countryside will be ripped asunder. Is it not preferable to be able to walk amidst abundant flora & fauna with its flourishing, native wildlife and be able to sit an enjoy peaceful solitude in areas of outstanding, natural beauty rather than travel from Manchester to London in 1 hour 10 minutes?? As Joni says:
Don't it always seem to go
That you don't know what you've got
    Till it's gone
“Jazz, isn’t that just a series of mistakes disguised as musical composition?”

And you can imagine William Blake's response.

Lawyers who specialise in planning and judicial review are going to make a fortune.

I need to go on a course
The Reverend Lord Henry was not one of those new-fangled parsons who carry the principles of their vocation uncomfortably into private life.

Ha ha .. Cameron won't be involved as the building won't start for another four years and he'll be looking for a new job by then. When Labour returns to power they won't waste five minutes in bulldozing the Tory shires to build HS2 - business people in the north of England see it as a benefit. It gets my vote ...

Spend half the amount and get our Internet backbone up to scratch as well as fibre to every home and you won't need HS2. Build the backbone and we can bring data centres back on shore. At a lower cost than offshoring. Especially if you put em up north

I like trains but to build such a network will require an awful lot of steel and concrete. No nation, not even China, could supply that much infrastructure material any quicker. Not to mention ballast, railway stations etc. They would need to be extremely efficient to achieve that target. IMHO.

In our part of the world that timescale would be a dream.....
