From a little bit of digging, I've discovered that what I have is the Project Essential - anyone know of the comparison between the two? Not too fussed regardless, picked it up for cheap anyways.

So I need an external box, any recommendations as to a decent one on a budget? Ideally no more than ~£40 and a good cheap cable?

    don't Pro-Ject do a phono stage?

FYI (sorry if this insults yr intelligence) but U need a phono stage 'cos

    1. cartridges don't produce enough signal to drive a line level i/p
    2. records are cut to the RIAA frequency response curve which is intentionally bass-light so the grooves on you record don't have to wiggle too much so the phono stage evens things out by doing the reverse transformation

you plug the o/p from the phono stage into any line level i/p

I've got a Cambridge Audio 640P - they're 40 quid second hand from ebay. Also rega do a good one. The Cambridge Audio one is excellent because it has MM and MC, and it has rumble protection. I recommend it.

I'd worry that this machine looks a bit poor quality (there must be hardware to link a proper turntable either direct or via the amp to a PC which must be a better option) but that's a clever idea that it includes software to enable 78 rpm conversion without having to have a 3rd speed setting on the platter.

That's what I do. I own two Rega decks and have one connected to my PC [for recording and playback] via a Soundcraft mixer that has a phono preamp built in [I guess for DJs].

    Here's one at £10 ... http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Soundcraft...item2ec5d04326

Hey Bertie! Don't you own a Soundcraft Compact 4 mixer? If so you can connect any record deck to your PC. You can also pick them up second hand on eBay for about £20.

Right I think I understand, so if I buy this and get a cable and connect them to these then everything should be fine and dandy?
