A standard Strat 5-way should fit perfectly in a Tele slot anyway, because it's exactly the same switch as a Tele 3-way, but with two extra in-between notches in the lever. If it doesn't, its either not a standard switch or not a standard plate.

I've also got a scheme for a single-coil and a splittable pickup using a 5-way - I usually use it for 1SC+1HB guitars, but it would work for a tappable single coil too.

    The settings are:

    Single coil
    Single coil + split pickup
Single coil + full pickup (the single coil is actually in parallel with half the split pickup, the other half being in series with both)
    Split pickup
    Full pickup

You can use it with the splittable pickup front or back, you just reverse the order of the connections.

(Ah... just checked the schematic and it might not work quite so well with a tapped single coil, since it uses one coil in one split position and the other one in the other, so unless the tap was a 2:1 ratio it might sound a bit thin in one position.)

Probably best with my standard push/pull setup then!

I'm not planning on using a standard Tele control plate - or any control plate at all.

I have in mind some sort of carved top which may well interfere with the normal placement of the control plate. At least, that's current thinking, which is all subject to change. No scratchplate either ...

    For switching, I'm thinking of using either a 4-way or a 5-way switch, with;

Pos1: full p'up, total bypass (ie straight to output jack)
    Pos2: tap, total bypass
    Pos3: full, through vol & no-load tone*
    Pos4: tap, through vol & no-load tone*

    And then, possibly
Pos5: full, through vol & fixed cap/res circuit.

    * Am I right in thinking that a no-load tone would give a complete bypass of the tone pot when on full (ie at 10)?

This is a slight diversion from the original post ...

Haha no worries, when you get bored with your Esquire you can throw one of the new H'Bs in the neck position, in fact I'm going to give that a go in my spare Tele tomorrow.

I'm just cutting a scratchplate for THREE Cow-T-Rons in a Strat ... The Pink Terror Strat will turn into the 'Pink Psycho-Billy Terror' a weapon of 'Memphis Destruction!'
