    I really don't know, to be honest. But I strongly suspect that connecting a 12V lead-acid battery to 240VAC could well cause it to overheat, melt, explode, spray acid in all directions, or a combination of the above.

    240V ??!!!! I've done it with 24VDC on a 12V and it worked. I believe it's more to do with the current than the voltage. I would definitely not connect 240V to a battery - besides which, it's AC, which I think defeats the object.

    240V can stop your heart - don't fuck with mains electricity for the sake of a battery - it's simply not worth the risk.

    been on the the old style charger for past 2 hours, changed it to the smart charger and its kicked onto bike and is now charging fine...

    strange, smart charger destructions says it can charge up dead/new batts.. I won't be counting on it though.

    What make is the charger? I've got a ctek one and it's never failed me.
