Default Help with hearing what's going on please?

Can anyone clue me in as to what is going on here between 0:12 and 0:55 - basically the "effortless" sounding noodling - I cannot for the life of my cue my ear in to what the scale or approach is...

    Any help very gratefully received

Chord: E flat 9 without the top b flat; doing a grace note minor 3rd to maj 3rd during the riff.

Wow! This is the best thing I've heard in ages - absolutely brilliant, effortless funk. Amazing. I'll have to check this stuff out some more.

Probably can't help with the guitar part but just tried to get the bare bones of the riff down, just for the fun of it.
Forgive the fact that it's miles out timing-wise and about the "whitest" funk you'll ever hear but at least I tried!

Sorry to bring this one back from the dead but, after noodling around playing the riff every now and again, it's only just dawned on me that it's all just based around an Eb9 to Eb7 change. I was thinking of it as specific notes but I just realised the chord shapes were in there. Doh! etc.

Anyway, I'm still bloody transfixed by everybody's playing in this one. Absolutely fantastic musicians. The drummer is playing some sick shit right there.

Oh, and just in case I get carried away with music and forget to obsess about gear, how smart is it to see a big ol' Gibson hollowbody (L5 or something else?) used for funk? Is it "cocked" wah pedal that's giving that nasal tone? It sounds great, whatever it is.

It is great isn't it and they make it look so damn laid back and easy - as a reformed progger I hanker after playing me some funk.
Do another mp3 Basher so we can hear the comparison.
Did you sample the drum track off the piece?

    >> that was great - made a loop of first bit and played over the top (badly)
I could only get my playing to sound like Talking Heads - could be worse - but it really freed me up, best noodling I've done for weeks.
