Have you tried the non-windows based bios updater?

You should be able to run a dos-based version.

You could also reset the bios to its defaults using its utility to do that, reboot/restart then go back in and try again.

Also, have you tried different usb ports? Sometimes the relevant bus is not the one you think, and it will work in a different usb slot.

For the more advanced, you could put an iso on a new partition and boot that partition as a fake CD drive.

Are you using windows cleaning software? e.g. ccleaner or winoptimiser?

I'd clear all caches and internet histories and stuff.

Also, what I tend to do is, when I'm making a linux boot disk, I unhook the pc from t'interweb before I run the install program. Oddly it seems to work better when burning the image. I also disable wi fi in bios if it's really being picky, because the less the installer has to recognise, the less issues there are.

Another tack is to use a win-installer, but again disconnect t'interweb, and reconnect when you've booted into your new distro.

If you put in a blank usb key, does it abort with an "os not present" error?

also run the installer in admin mode, from an admin login. Actually better to do so from safe mode.

    There isn't one

I can't find one its a Pheonix bios on a Myallm motherboard if that helps

    Tried that

I've tried all the native ports which since my IT engineer friend resurected my laptop forgot that they're USB 2.0 and I tried the PCMCIA card I added in to have working USB 2.0 ports

Would that not require Demon tools type software surely that wouldnt work if at any time it needed to restart?

    No

    Done - do it regularly

The USB-boot installed requests that it be connected to the interwebs, one of them requires it.

The Windows based installer downloads the ISO to install from as it goes, no internet - no install
If you put in a blank usb key, does it abort with an "os not present" error?
No it doesn't recognise it at all
also run the installer in admin mode, from an admin login. Actually better to do so from safe mode.
    Done done and not done.

still disconnect from interweb. That's only for updates.

Re: cd partition. 650MB at end of disk. linux doesn't need restarts. You'd need a boot manager, but GRUB is just that. not triedit but theoretically possible and seen it refe renced before.

Also can you remove hdd from boot list altogether?

Can't remove things from the list - its one of those that has all 7 possibilities it wants to allow, and will only move them up or down

I'm beginning to think the Ubuntu peeps who wrote the windows installer were numpties ...

Create a partition 12gb should be enough... tell it to do an 8gb install... then it complains that there's no space...

Trying again telling it to try a 5gb install...

Just a thought. have you tried an older memory stick. It might be that it's too modern for the bios.

Looks like you've got it in hand, though.

ARG! 5gb install on a 12gb partition and "not enough space on device!"

    ARG ARG ARG ARG!

Also the only other memory sticks I have are too small - that's why I went and bought one this week to try Ubuntu.

    ARG!

Tried using the virtualbox version to run from the USB stick and install from there... crashes and spends eternity trying to tell me why...

    ARG!

It certainly seems that way at times - I want to learn to do data security type stuff, and lots of the tools are linux based, so thought it was time to learn Linux... not going well so far...

I must say I've never had an Ubuntu install that didn't go absolutely swimmingly. Sometimes lower spec machines don't like the GUI installer, but the text mode version works just as well.
It's slightly unfair to judge Linux on the difficulty of installing as most people get Windows machines pre installed and never have to go through the hassle of an clean install. If you buy a preinstalled Ubuntu machine all of peoples usual bad experiences of Linux go away.

That said I think the current Unity version of Ubuntu is actually a pretty poor desktop experience so I use Windows 7 at home. Most people I know who were Ubunutu desktop users have either migrated to Mint or MS/Apple.
