I've always been willing to spend money on tyres as they're ultimately what keeps you on the road. 3 months ago I needed to buy a full set, so I bought Winter Tyres for the first time. Shod my 3 series BMW with Michelin Alpin 4's - i've been really impressed with them as I live about half a mile from any road that gets gritted/salted.

Yeah, it's one of those tiny little VW Passat estates. I can't handle big cars like the Toyota Aygo or Smart cars.

Its the size of the wheel that drives the general cost, not the size of the car. Its true that anything 17" plus you will be looking at around 150 quid a corner for a reasonable tyre from a reputable maker, but there are still a fair number of bigger cars like passats and mondeos with 16 inch wheels fitted.

Small city cars are often the double whammy of smaller rims and thinner profiles so you can expect to pay a lot less.

As far as part worn tyres go...I wouldn't touch them with a barge pole. Where do you think they come from? Scrappers and write offs, often, so there's a good chance they have been involved in an accident and potentially sustained damage.

I was looking at a Mondeo Titanium X Sport until I realised I couldn't find one without the 19" alloys. The decent tyres were starting at £235 each.

I always go for Uniroyal Rainsport 2s. Better than the Conti Sport Contacts of the parent company and usually a fair bit cheaper.

    I wouldn't buy a car with 19" wheels either...

and I agree, rain sports are very good tyres.

Please buy either Goodyear or Dunlop tyres. I'm gassing for a Fender amp head you see.

Yep company cars cost, but still worth it to me..

"...come to my office at 10:30 and change the tyres please. While you are here, can you also replace all the dodo eggs that I keep in the engine bay, add a new unicorn horn and make sure none of the elf wings need changing. Send the bill to someone else. Oh yes, I need to leave at 11 for a meeting so don't be late. Thanks."

I find that buying tyres is something that comes to bite me on the bum just when I thought I'd scraped some GAS money together.
