Its not what your looking for (a stomp) but the zoom g2 has a pretty good distortion tone.

I hate the Metalzone. They seem to have far too much fizz, a really nasty sounding pedal for my liking.
How much gain do you really need?

For a classic metal sound a tubescreamer and an old Marshall are the ultimate for me. The really heavy sounds are often the result of the mix of bass, guitar and drum sounds.

A lot of modern metal sounds are aping the sound of the Shred Master pedal going into an original 5150 (it's what Carcass used on the later albums).
the Napalm Death sounds mentioned earlier is a DS-1.
AH! I found the edit sig function. Hurrah!!

Anyone tried the MXR Dime Distortion? I saw a demo on YouTube and it sounded pretty good but it's also pretty expensive...

Does it actually sound like a Randall Warhead? I love that synth-like metal tone.

Yeah I spose... and it can depend on the settings too.

For example I don't really like the sound of the Metal Muff in this vid cos it's way too Muff-like:

But in this one it sounds great to me, much more what I'd call metal:

I guess the only thing for me to do is to find a shop with all the pedals I want to try

It doesn't get the synthy kind of sound to my ears, even if people were commenting on that video that it did. I don't know, it's hard to explain what I like about Warhead distortion...

I wonder how much of that sound was to do with the pickups Dimebag used. The pedal demo on YouTube is with an Epiphone Les Paul standard, and by many accounts Epiphone stock pickups aren't all that great.

    There's another demo here:

I think it was a lot to do with the Noise gate he was using. A lot of the time noise gates make your tone very artificial. Listen to Box of Metal videos - it really destroys the tone. So whatever noise gate he was using was tone altering in a different way to that.

The clip on the website is a little closer alright. Still way too Generic Marshall-ish for my tastes.
