heaviest distortion pedal I've ever had (and still have) is the Danelectro Black Paisley Liquid Metal.

has level, eq, distortion, mid boost an scoop and also an octave switch that drops an octave below (tracks perfectly)

superb pedal and built like a tank.

OD - I have just bought a Digitech bad monkey. other end of the spectrum but brilliant at overdriving - analogue circuit, doesn't affect your tone either, unless you want it to.

I think the bad monkey is proof that a company can get it right on a budget stomper. Boss seem to go a little wayward at times but still have their moments.

Another vote for Danelectro. This time the Fabtone.

It may look like it fell off a '57 Chevvy but I'm very impressed with it. Damped chords are tight, with none of that flabby, farty rumble. Open chords / single strings have a clear, bright tone - no square wave buzziness that afflicts a lot of distortion pedals (Boss HM2 I had years ago - are you listening?) There's more than enough gain for Pantera style riffage too. I actually sold my JMP1 after I got the Fabtone, as I just didn't need the Marshall any more. I use my Pod XT for gigs and recording most of the time now, but sometimes it's just nice to wig out with pedals! I've had the Danelectro for 8 years now and I wouldn't part with it. Jeez, I hope they still make 'em...

What I do for a chunky rhythm sound and a smooth lead tone is have a Boss E.Q. pedal after the Fabtone. A bit of scoop for rhythm and flatter for lead with a bit less top. If you have a multi-channel amp I guess you could use that instead.

I love the Fabtone. Reminds me of the silicon trannied Tone Benders in sound. Like you say though, an EQ pedal afterwards (an old Yamaha in my case) and you can turn the fuzz into metal.

I'm glad someone else is a Fabtone fan. Most other guitarists at gigs would take one look at it and say "WTF??!? ('spesh when I was in a Slayer style outfit...)

It's the only disto pedal I've had that I actually have to turn the gain down on. Less is more, especially if it's feeding a nice tube (oops sorry, I mean valve) amp.
