MacOS contains (or used to contain) UNIX BSD 4.2
Windows is NO competition for UNIX. The difference is you can do useful work with UNIX.
There's one other difference ... with Linux you build it yourself and if you want you can edit it yourself to get it to do what you want it to do. The downside is if the result doesn't work, its YOUR fault not Microsoft's.
IMO the main advantage of UNIX is its shell. Next to writing your own tools in C it's the most powerful thing I've ever come across. Windows has nothing like it.
