Default What's the best distortion / drive pedal in the world?

The pedal that gave me the biggest 'wow' moment was the Blackstar HT Dist into my DSL-50. So I sold both the pedal and the amplifier.

Danno TODv1 has to be up there.

Whichever one being listed for sale in the Classifieds at the time
    Red ones are better.

    I'm going cheap.

    Marshall Jackhammer.

Super versatile, powerful EQ, really needs to be used with a totally clean amp with a flat EQ and it sounds fantastic. £40 can't go wrong!

TBH - I think the fact that is says 'Marshall' and is so cheap actually prevents it from being held in higher regard.
Sibella: He says he wants to go to Europe to expand his mind.Louis: He certainly has room to do so.

I have one sitting in my cupboard...it lived on my pedalboard briefly, then I tried to sell it but couldn't give it away

If I recall it had two modes, one of which should have been labelled 'good' and the other 'shite'

    I'll say Tubescreamers.

So may things are subtly (or in some cases not at all) amended versions of a TS that it has to be the one most used type out there. That's as good a measure of 'best' as any for me.

HAHAHA! I've been there so many times. "WOW! this gear combo sounds amazing! Logically, that means I should sell it and get something else."

You surely know as well as anyone else here, there is no best. It depends on too much. The most consistently usable distortion pedal I've had is the Rat II. Others have sounded better, but ultimately felt boring/ redundant. I don't want a tasty amp-overdrive-in-a-box pedal, I have amps for that. I want something different, and the Rat is that alternative.

I like the excitement of going on stage after a band that's been all high gain amp heads and 4x12 cabs with huge and smooth distortion, and stamping on my Rat through the clean channel of an open backed combo and getting something so much messier and ragged sounding. It's like shitting on the table at a management-level meeting.
