    Default Recording software

I've recently purchased a new 'puter with the intent of using it for recording. I already have a Boss 1200CD recorder as well, and my Marshall has a lineout, so a direct input into the boss isn't an issue.

However, I'd like to know if I need any special software, or cabling. Please.

Use as a recording device, or somewhere I can keep what I have recorded. I'm quite happy using the Boss as a recorder, but havn't got anywhere I can store what I've recorded.

Sorry, I'm not really to savvy with this stuff.....

After trying Cubase, Sonar & Cakewalk, I have used Reaper for the last 5 years and have been knocked over by it. £40 buys you as much functionality as you will ever need including some pretty cool plug-in's. It has an excellent interface, it's glitch free (which Cubase was absolutely not !), is intuitive and most functions can be carried out with a 'right click'.

Add a cheap multi fx to act as your' interface (dean2371 has an RP250 for sale in the classifieds that would do nicely) and you really are good to go with the exception, possibly of a decent sound card. I've used an M-Audio 24/96 ( can be had now for buttons S/H) for years and have no intention of changing any time soon.

With regards to leads I use bog standard 1/4" guitar leads as I go straight to the sound card, but depending how you decide to record you could use USB, optical or S/PDIF, none of them are exorbitant.

Cool, Thanks DIlbert, the Boss has a USB out, and the 'puter has USB inputs. As for the soundcard thingy, the 'puter has decent (ish) built-in sounds, but can easily be set through my stereo.
I shall have a look this evening.

I forgot to mention, you can have Reaper on trial and pay when you have validated it. It really is a good sequencer and the folks on the forum are very helpful. In fact a lot of the upgrades (they are frequent and free) are created from suggestions and feedback from forumites. There is also a free downloadable manual, that is very comprehensive, well written and understandable, covering all the basics of recording.

    Another Reaper vote.

Not sure that's what you need, if all you want to do is transfer recordings from the Boss to the PC over the USB cable, just plug the mofo in - It says on the Boss website that's what it is for.

If you want to do stuff to it once on the PC, Reaper is excellent.

If you want to record direct into the PC, I don't think the Boss 1200CD will do it. You'd need another Sound Card - USB or Firewire seems to be the way things are going - saves you having to do open-heart surgery on the PC !
