probably just the phase inverter. engl tends to list the tubes like that (which is fair enough, arguably the PI is part of the power amp).

Thanks for clarifying that! Thought it was a bit odd.

To be honest, if I was in your situation, I'd go for the Engl, a Fender HRD or a Blackstar HT40. They're all really good amps, sound great and work for a variety of styles. Used, the Engl happens to be the cheapest.

Another one is my classic recommendation to every player ever. Laney LC50 or LH50 (combo or head - hence 'c' and 'h'). Kick arse, affordable sounds.

tbh I'd avoid the Blackstar 40 and 60 , as soon as you get in a band situation they just fade away , I loved my Soloist 60 until i tried it out with the band , very disappointed , and last saturday went to see a mates band ( he uses his Club40 ) everybody was commenting how gutless the amp was with eith his LP or PRS . I know some ppl here swear by them and thats fair enough , but if you are gigging its well worth considering how it will work in a band context .

the other guitarist in our band has a marshall dsl 401 which sounded ok. he's bought himself a 2x12 s/h cab for £150 and now it sounds great.

Suggestion from the leftfield here - XT Club combo. Compact, loud (or quiet) as you like, lightweight, great clean sound, perfect for adding pedals. Don't be put off by the 200W, it sounds great when it's not cranked.

Or if you've got a 50W or 25W switch, go to a 1x12. I've done that with my Carvin Legacy head. 100 quid and you've got a brand new Carvin 112 cab with a Vintage 30. Sell your 4x12 for 150 quid, and pay the 50 quid fee to your lifestyle consultant Viz.
Ibanez & Callaghan guitars, Carvin Legacy heads & cabs. Rack: G-system iB modified; Keeley pedals (DS1, SD1, BD2, CE2, MT2, TS9, SD9, AD9); Korg DTR2000, Furman PL-8, Ebtech Hum Eliminator. Floor: Morley Bad Horsie & Little Alligator; Digitech Whammy; Rocktron Banshee; MXR Phase 90

I've got a 1x12 JCM900 combo that's 2 channels, is great for blues/rock and easy to cart around.

The other guitarist I play with has a Valvestate head and IIRC a Valvestate 2x12. His sound IMHO is a bit thin in rehearsal. My combo is much richer/fatter and seems to effortlessley sit in the background or cut through - whatever I need it to do.
