The remake was (naturally) crap, but the original series had me hooked as a young 'un.

Still seems the most likely way to go.

I have felt for some time that the next global war will be caused due to overpopulation. As resources and especially water become more scarce / expensive, there will be uprisings in parts of Africa. Some countries will react with increasing hostile actions that will escalate until one of countries invades another. The UN will be involved and this will increase tensions further. Eventually one someone will set off a nuclear device and this will escalate into a global war.

Of course this wont kill everyone as the rich who have been hoarding the resources which started the conflict years earlier will be holed up in some bunker somewhere but they will die out eventually. Or the human race will evolve into a mole / cockroach hybrid.

We get increasing numbers of these near miss reports so I do think that eventually one of them wont miss. However I have to assume that asteroids have been near missing for donkeys years, its only in recent years we have been able to detect them.

Watching in via NASA TV as it came to closest approach was almost as tense as that Mayan calendar thing last December.

I'm going with Jerry Falwell's prediction that 'The Gays' will crush all decent, non-bumming heterosexuals with a steamroller. Leaving only non-breeders to inhabit the planet - the human race slowly dying out in a bubbling froth of spunk, sodomy, and Judy Garland.

OK, I made that last bit up, but i'm sure thats what he was getting at.

How will the human race end?

    In a dead heat!

Serious answer, we will evolve into something else. I don't foresee any cataclysm that would totally wipe out mankind but in 10 million years there will be something creeping around that can trace its genes back to a hairless ape that got too smart for it's own good.

the calculations are fairly simply - it wouldnt happen - no species in history has ever become extinct from being too populous - for fairly obvious reasons

i dont think mankind will ever become extinct unless evolving into something else counts as extinction - our understanding of things is increasing very rapidly so we would need to die out very soon (in the grand scale of things) in order to fail to achieve a level of technology where we could overcome whatever threatens to wipe us out
