Wasn't Ian McCulloch in Echo and the Bunnymen though ?

Still is. E&TB are touring soon. Seeing them in April.

Even a nuclear war wouldn't destroy all life on the planet...just the richest nations.

Assuming that doesn't happen, the sci-fi geek in me is going with the singularity.

It’s in Revelation! The 144,000 will be Raptured and the rest of us will er… sort of… do stuff. With machine guns and doodads and whatnot. And Christ and the Antichrist. There’s an American Dad episode that explains it better than I can. That’s what some loonies believe anyway. I’m not so sure they are correct!

Eschatology is pretty pointless IMNSVHO, as nobody will ever know. My own guess is we will probably move off Earth and start the process of spreading through the galaxy.

But we don’t need any kind of catastrophic event such as war, asteroid etc. The sun has a natural built in life-ending mechanism in that in about 5 billion years it will approach the end of its life and probably end up – IIRC - as a red giant, whose diameter will encompass that of Earth’s orbit. Thus we will be consumed in the sun itself. I’m not sure if it goes out to Mars’ orbit, so maybe we’ll all have relocated there.

Even then it doesn’t matter. If we spread through the galaxy, at some point the Second Law of Thermodynamics will tap us on the shoulder and thrust the heat-death of the universe onto us, and all our atoms will break up into fundamental particles, then photons of disordered heat energy. After that I get a little hazy.

The "Big Crunch" has been disproven for a while now I think. The universe will keep on expanding until it reaches heat death.

When you put it like that, odds of 50,000:1 for the rapture sound quite appealing compared with inevitable death by thermodynamic equilibrium. If only I could be sure that I should believe the bible rather than the other competing books!

(I'm actually not sure that heat death of the universe is universally accepted - some suggest that the maximum entropy of the universe may be increasing more quickly than the actual entropy so we might be getting further away from heat death. Mind you, a forever expanding universe will make it pretty lonely even if we cheat the second law).

The loonies who are into Rapture crap should be ignored at the earliest possible convenience.

I'm a "universalist" so everyone will be saved and end up in Heaven anyway. It's not "if" but "when" as far as I'm concerned. Biblical proof-texting works any way you want it to.

But see here... http://www.nobelprize.org/nobel_priz...011/press.html for confirmation of the expanding universe. The cosmologists received the Nobel Prize for it 2011. In fact the univers is not only expanding, it is accelerating!
