Default Debut as a Radio DJ tomorrow

Well after being asked would I help out at a local Radio station, which at the time was only available online, a lot of things happenned, committees changed, people lost interest and I walked away. Well recently I was asked back by the new guys, and talk about thrown in at the deep end, it went online today as Abbey 104.7 fm. I actually start at 3pm tomorrow, just going to do a 1 hour spot on country music and see how it goes from there.
Slightly nervous to say the least. !

Dislocate a testicle ! (I'm not sure I've got this performing arts terminology right). Hope it goes well. Don't picture thousands of people hanging on your every word... imagine you are chatting to one mate who is sat opposite you in the room. Which, if you're doing a country music show, will be closer to the truth anyway. .

Whatever you do, don't put on an American accent. We used to have a DJ on our local station who did a country show in an appalling pretend Southern Drawl, with no hint of irony, despite the fact that he was Welsh. I know people who tuned in just to laugh at him.

Anyway - enjoy.... Will you get to pick the playlist yourself ?

    Good luck dude.

Don't be tempted to ring up any hospitals enquiring after the health of their patients though....not a long term career improver.

Excellent, did you know I am Welsh and my old country band was called Southern Drawl

With my accent I will have enough trouble trying to get the Dorset people understanding me, let alone trying a Texas Drawl !
And yes I can pick my own songs, so don't be surprised to hear well known country bands such as the Rolling Stones and ZZ Top.

Can you really pick your 'own' songs - or can you only select from the songs they are sanctioned/allowed to play (via their PRS license/payments etc)? Only reason I ask is because I went to a local radio station before to help out and they said I couldn't bring my own records/CD's in - unless what I wanted to play 'was on their list'

I presume 'unknown/unsigned' bands wouldn't fall into this category - else how would a future 'John Peel' type show discover new talent?

Sweet memories of a camping holiday in Wales where the only radio station we could pick up was a Welsh language one. It played quite a lot of country music and the only words we understood by the DJ's were the names of the artists. So, saying Box Car Willy in a bad Welsh accent still gets a laugh in the Weary household.

Kone - have a great time.

I will be playing my own CD`s from my own collection, If anyone would like their music played, be it unsigned or whatever, I will give it to which ever DJ will deal with that particular genre. We do have bands coming in and doing acoustic sessions, as space is extremely tight. John Peel`s Ideals lives on with small community radio stations as we are not dictated to by a corporation and playing a small selection of music repeatedly.
Thanks for all the comments, not sure I want to dislocate anything let alone a testicle though
