    Default Phosphor Bronze vs 80/20

I've been using phosphor bronze for as long as I can remember, but I do have a dreadnought that can be a bit dark sounding at times and wonder what difference there might be with 80/20's. Anyone care to share their experiences?

I found them a lot brighter. Then again having seen one of your accoustics the strings could actually be described as being made out of an interesting combination of rust and smeg anything should sound a lot brighter.

I had a Gibson acoustic which was so dark sounding that I had to use electric steel strings on it

I might be confusing the two of them actually, as it was Tim's Avalon that Noisy bought. It was the most disgusting fretboard I have seen by some distance such was its mankiness. You could actually feel your finger tips stick to the things. Either that or they have a special brown/black/green coating material designed so that the guitar will never intonate and will make you want to wash your hands after five minutes of playing.

In the end I didn't buy it. It was a fantastic guitar but in hindsight I think I'm more of a dreadnought player - i.e. mostly strumming/flatpicking with some travis picking thrown in.

The strings were fantastically disgusting though. Really, utterly manky.

I've always found coated strings (Elixir etc) have an un-natural zingy brightness to them. They might be worth a try.

80/20 bronze go off quicker as far as I can remember so even if they are bright to start with then they might not last long.

If you really don't like the nasty coated ones then brass may be worth a try.
