So I was trying to follow these instructions:

    http://www.jeremymorgan.com/tutorial...-powerbook-g4/

...but fell at the first hurdle. Can't get the thing to boot from the cd. darn.

Can anyone help me with this? I just can't seem to get my Mac to recognise this as a bootable disc. The instructions just say to burn the files to disc...is there anything obvious I am not doing?

A lot of boot-disk related problems stem either from the media or the software to burn the cd...

What did you use to burn the disk, and and which flavour of blank disk did you use (+, -, +/-, writable or re-writable?) some drives have a little less patience booting from the "wrong" sort

Cool, thanks - I had been using my PC to burn the files...when I used the Mac then it worked.

    Success!

So...all seemed to be well...had Ubuntu installed and all was good. I could get to the Interweb with an Ethernet cable but not wireless. There was a wireless symbol in the top bar but when I clicked on it it just said 'wireless - disconnected' and it was greyed out. I found a guide from the same chap linked above for installing a wireless driver and I followed that (seemed to involve copying some firmware from a windows driver downloaded from the net) but then the computer refused to reboot. It just went through the initial text screens and then went blank.

I think I'll probably have to re-install Ubuntu now but once I do - how do I get the wireless operational? Probably search the official Ubuntu site for a driver this time?

Was this the guide you used?

If this doesn't work you may need to invest in a Wi-Fi dongle.

    No, it was this one:

    http://www.jeremymorgan.com/tutorial...-powerbook-g4/

...looks like it is trying to do much the same thing though.

Oddly my wireless card driver issues caused major crashing problems.

Run it from the cmd line and type
    "lspci|grep Network" (capital N)
That should tell you specifically which network card is in there, assuming it's a b43 legacy card you're in luck as I had to go through the motions of deleting the original b43 set of drivers and installing new ones - the ones that come with ubuntu are not great, but there's some nice ones out there

Looks like it is nothing to do with the wireless firmware. I did a fresh install and after a couple of reboots it started to hang in just the same way. I'm a bit pantsed now because I don't know if I can even use the Mac to burn a disc with a different distro. Poo.
