    Default Eb7 voicing

I've started blogging a teensy bit on my music facebook page about guitar techniques etc, thought this one was worth sharing with you good folks.

I've been asked how I voice the Eb7 chord on the guitar at the beginning of a blues in Eb. The standard partial E-shape barre-chord at the 11th fret (no1) is a bit unwieldy that high up the neck. The same notes can be played with a partial A-shape barre chord at the 6th fret (no2) but in practice I re-voice the chord to a partial C-shape, moving the 7th from the 2nd string to the 4th string (no3). This maintains the principle of root on the 6th or 5th string, 3rd & 7th on the 4th and 3rd string, leaving the 2nd and 1st string free for higher extensions like 9ths, 13ths, etc.

    no1 - 11 x 11 12 x x = root, 7th, 3rd
    no2 - x 6 x 6 8 x = root, 7th, 3rd
    no3 - x 6 5 6 x x = root, 3rd, 7th

Blues in Eb? That sounds an accident waiting to happen! I used no3 or an Eb9th, as I use 9ths whenever I can!

On the other hand, if you stick to the treble strings and let the bass player handle the root note, maybe

    x x x 6 4 6 x

Following that theory you have 8 shapes for Eb7 using drop 2 and drop 3 voicings, and if the melody note is a chord tone it's made the decision even easier because you tend to put that note on the top of the voicing if you can.

has anyone pointed out if you leave the bass player on root and fifth duties then you can play the 3rd and 7th of Eb7 or pretend to call them the 3rd and 7th of A7 (is it? I've got a cold and nothing is making sense)
