Default So, should there be a set minimum intelligence level for jurors ?

Given the jaw-droppingly dense questions asked by the jury in the Vicky Pryce trial, do you think there ought to be a minimum level of intelligence set for all jurors, or is the 'peer' element of the right to trial sacrosanct ?

Personally, if I were being tried for, say, murder, I would want the most intelligent jury possible to deliberate my fate. I wouldn't my freedom left in the hands of a pile of fuckwits incapable of hitting a cow's arse with a banjo.

I don't see what's so special about the right to be tried by "your peers".

    What say you ?

...and before anyone points it out, I do realise the above post implies that my peers would actually be fuckwits incapable of hitting a cows arse with a banjo.

I know people who've done jury service, and it's quite scary that one's liberty could be in the hands of some of the people I've heard about on juries. So maybe there should be some kind of 'standard'..

It depends. If I did it, then I want the stupidest bunch of mouth breathing idiots ever assembled in one place since the "slappers entrance" to the last Man U Christmas Party to judge me as my barrister will confuse them more easily (or possibly 12 economists - they will believe any old shit if you call it a theory).

If I am innocent I want nothing less than wall to wall PhDs in maths and physics so that the clarity and truth of my argument can be understood properly.

Actually, if I was being tried by a jury it would worry me. A lot. I would probably, prefer to be judged by a smaller panel of impartial experts.

I've missed all this as I've been at the books. What has Britain done now?

    Found it!

Can you define what is reasonable doubt?

Mr Justice Sweeney said: "A reasonable doubt is a doubt which is reasonable. These are ordinary English words that the law doesn't allow me to help you with beyond the written directions that I have already given."

FFS. I'm going back to studying.

Think there should be a set minimum intelligence level for voting in a election before we start with jury members.

A fellow juror said to a friend of mine " I'm glad I didn't get picked for that case - I didn't understand the charge." It was 'attempted' murder.

We were talking about this - Mrs P is about to do jury service in two weeks time... a bit of a pain as she's a community nurse and worried about her patients.
I did it 10 years ago and after the initial excitement found the process to be very frustrating... the other jurors weren't exactly the sharpest knives in the block and I'd despair to ever be in the position of relying on them if I was ever accused of something... I'm not quite sure what system would be better than the one we have though - there are bigger issues with the legal system in the uk than the juries imho
