The Incas actually built large stone buildings around which they grew crops and used hydroponics to supply nutrients. Some scholars believe that the hanging gardens of Babylon may have been a hydroponics-based food system.

It's actually needed now - buildings overcome two essential problems. Much cheaper to build [land use wise] and they can use technology so, for example, you can grow broccoli 24x7 whereas its normally a seasonal crop in the UK. In addition you don't need soil [hydroponics] and artificial light combined with intense natural light means crops can be farmed much quicker in a pest free environment. The driver will be cost [food prices are rising] and the availability of fresh veg as meat becomes too expensive.

In Britain we're only one major food crisis from starving. More land in Africa and the US is being used to grow crops for bio fuels and with a growing world population that means more food shortages.

This is kinda why I'm out of this conversation as it's one of those "surprise" conversations that starts off fun but ends up being about a bundle of beliefs I don't believe in "why yes it is a lovely morning... mmmhmm yep, uh-huh, yep ... lemme stop you there, I don't believe in your God and not only will I swear in front of your children I will shout obsenities at them... good day to you sir".

    Don't be ridiculous.

There's never enough space for jetpacks in submarines.
