It's actually needed now - buildings overcome two essential problems. Much cheaper to build [land use wise] and they can use technology so, for example, you can grow broccoli 24x7 whereas its normally a seasonal crop in the UK. In addition you don't need soil [hydroponics] and artificial light combined with intense natural light means crops can be farmed much quicker in a pest free environment. The driver will be cost [food prices are rising] and the availability of fresh veg as meat becomes too expensive.
In Britain we're only one major food crisis from starving. More land in Africa and the US is being used to grow crops for bio fuels and with a growing world population that means more food shortages.
