An interesting one is to try your sequence (Scale or whatever) not in 8ths but use a dotted 1/8 and 1/16. Then Re-do with 1/16 followed by a dotted 1/8. This will cut the time to transition from one note to the other down to 1/16 (at the quickest point). Initially it appears not to make much difference. (Practice this with a metronome).

However then go back to your metronome and play 1/8 notes you will go much faster & play cleaner too. Hope this makes sense. I am at work and cannot post the notation. If you want pm me and I'll email you a worksheet.

Good deals with: Longjaw, Fastboy, Axemanrio.

For every difficult and complex question there is an answer that is simple, easily understood and wrong.

Back in the day I spent a lot of time with the Steve Vai 10hr system and it worked for me.

Hi, thanks. That would take some dedication, I'm sure. Also it would mean me packing in work which is not a good idea. Unless you mean you did bits of it each day?

    Like I say, I have 1.5 hours, that's it.

Thanks for the support guys. Just a little update. I will have to stress though that I am pretty immovable on the 1/2 hr I will give to this per night. I don't think it's unreasonable to not want one single excercise taking up my entire alloted time slot.

The funk rhythm guitar thing I'm working through is just as important to me. I want to become a little faster that's all and have the technique improve a bit, not become Malmsteen or Petrucci. My future goals are Funk, Blues, classic Rock, Jazz, soul and crossovers of such genres.

I seem to play faster when not in rigid repetative patterns, and when hammering on notes and pull offs. Faster when more economical etc.

Having said that, I have stuff in my head that I am estimating a required speed for and as in the OP, I would be happy at 125 comfort, so maybe 140@ 4 clicks pushing it.

Silly question but, at 1/2 per night, 7 days, how long do you guys think acheiving increases at 10bpm(4 notes) would take?

Not making excuses, I'm going to carry on with it.

What abot trying 3 notes per string as well as the CAGED version, anyone recommend that?

    Impossible to say.
Some people will add 10 bpm in a week.
    Some will take a month.
    Some never get it together.

I favour 3 notes per string over CAGED myself, but imho it is important to do it all.

i think the legnth of time it will take is how good your technique is...it will vary from one person to another....some people will start really slow getting the technique perfect then speed up quickly....others will start a faster but have a sloppier technique and wont go much beyond that.....the latter not being able to play at intermediate speeds either....

i think the 3 NPS is worthwhile learning as well as the caged system.....i think the best way is to learn the 5 positions then use the 3 NPS to link these positions together and even use a single string to play the scales on all 6 strings.....

err... basically what Octatonic said on the post above...

Hi Barney, What would you class as intermediate Speeds? It's a bit vague. I'm surpirised how many guitar solos I've been able to learn with my speed range 88-115x4, depending on what is required in the solo. If it's a relatively short fast piece I can manage it. It's hard for me to define at what stage I'm at. I would have probably said intermediate in my all round playing ability, but what do I know

Thanks, and the same other guys above too.

So that's like going from 80 at 4 per click to 90 at 4 per click? You meant 40bpm literally?

Sorry, I'm a bit anal with details

I would be happy to properly add 40 in 5 weeks.

i suppose this would be good example of intermediate and quick used in one solo....try from 2.18
