Elastica was just about my favourite offering of the Britpop era. I was pleased to read it was Anthony Kiedis's pretty much fave of the time as well, since I've been a RHCP fan since the late 80's.

Some great recommendations on here, barring Muse. Just can't get on with them at all.

'Ride' were the local heroes at the time, (also Radiohead but they're probably a bit too early to count), but to be fair I was much more into Jamiroquai, Corduroy and Mother Earth at the time. I liked a couple of the Cast singles - 'Fine Time' and 'Walk Away'

Just checked Ride out on youtube - they had a good producer! - sounded quite tinny live by comparison

Good thread, lot of good memories being brought back (bit like tuning into absolute 90s on digital radio).
I did a fair few festivals back then, probably more "alternative" than mainstream. Ozric tentacles (obviously), thunderdogs, the levellers, back to the planet, systems 7, banco de Gaia, eat static, chumbawumba (before tubthumping!!!) chemical brothers, orbital, Aphex twin.
Guess I'm getting away from the britpop theme but yeah, 90's had a lot of interesting musically going for it.
Back to britpop, no one's mentioned thousand yard stare, often neglected as they sort of dissolved before britpop really kicked off.

Surprised not to see a mention of these:

    Gene
    Long Pigs
    Milltown Brothers
    The La's
Playing whilst drunk is only permissable if all other band members are in a similar state.

Martin Rossiter from Genes solo record was one of my fave records of last year. Simply outstanding. I liked the longpigs, who would have known what would become of the guitarist eh...

    Best albums of the 90s
    Maniacs - Holy Bible
Ocean colour scene - Mosley Shoals ( Steve Cradocks guitar playing was the reason I learned guitar )
Blur - Modern Life is rubbish
Gene - Drawn to the deep end
    Oasis - Definatly Maybe
    Catalonia - International velvet
    Radiohead - Ok computer
    Suede - Dog man star

All of these I still listen to regularly.

Pulp weren't so much the jewel in Britpop's crown as the one band that justified the whole sorry enterprise.
