I think that was an episode of Numb3rs...

We've got a part-time fire station in our village in Kent.

When I were't lad in Gainsborough, Lincolnshire (1960's), long before pagers were invented (we had to walk down the street and queue up for the telelphone) the Fire Brigade sounded an air-raid siren, then Mr Higginbottom up the road got in his Cortina and drove down the hill to the fire station. Seemed to work...

is the OP not going to comment now that it had been fairly comprehensively shown that unmanned (retained) fire stations are neither uncommon, or new

"The OP" ? You can refer to me by name you know. I thought I did comment, in post 12.

Or were you hoping for some kind of public humiliation, a 'throwing myself at the mercy of the forum' for the unforgivable crime of not knowing about retained firefighters ?

You're a funny bugger Bert. I've always been civil to you, sometimes even complimentary, yet you've always acted like I've just shit on your sofa. Fair enough, you don't have to be civil if you don't want to, it's not compulsory, but it's common courtesy and if you can't manage that then there's little point in engaging with you.
