    Default Email hosts

Aarrgh! I've been using my ISP email account for years. NTL World which is now VirginMedia. But when we moved house they couldn't provide us with a decent service so I'm no longer a customer. I was told that my email would remain active but I've discovered recently (by accident) that it's about to get killed off.

So, I wondered what people use. I've got my own domain name but I don't think I want to use those for email. And I don't want to fall into the same trap again with my current ISP. I've got a GMail account but it's got a crappy name and gets rammed with SPAM.

    What's a good option?

You can't do much better than gmail for functionality.

I know. VirginMedia use GMail for their webmail so I've been using it for years now. I'll see if I can clear my GMail account of spam.
I've looked at domain names and found a few more sensible ones that I might register so I've got a longer term option.

I have Gmail for my university and Apple iCloud for personal stuff.
Much prefer Apple iCloud over Gmail- esp with iPhone and Mac's.

If you have your own domain name and it is hosted with someone reasonable why don't you want to do the email there?

No the OP but I have a couple of domain names.
I don't host the email there as it isn't as reliable as someone like Apple or Gmail.
Also iPhone integration isn't as brilliant.
I actually redirect email from the domain names to the Apple account.

The domain names I have aren't the most suitable to use for job hunting etc. Not terrible, but not great either.
I think I'll register something more suitable and then use GMail to manage it for me.

I now need to backup all of my email from VirginMedia which is hosted in a customised GMail.

I'm not sure I follow. Are you not a fan of VM and, because of that ill feeling towards them, you think badly of any partners they have? I've been really happy with the VM mail and think that Google's reputation and product quality actually enhances VM's offering.

What I think I will do is register a new domain name later tonight, then use GMail to host my mail accounts. Failing that, I'll just use my regular GMail account to aggregate any other email accounts I have. I've got the ability to host my own mail server but I'd rather use the power of Google.
