Default Dirt from pedals or dirt from amp?

I've always been a dirt from amp person but I'm thinking of changing that around...it would just make life easier

Normally I prefer the dirt from the amp although I recently bought a Klon and finding it most satisfying to have the amp semi-dirty and the Klon wound up quite high.

It is distorted without being overly compressed- very cool.

    Either/both.

It's easier to have pedals that can be used into a clean amp if you're going to be playing through provided gear though, so I try to have combinations that work like that as well as with an overdriven amp.

Dunno if it's just me but with valve amp dirt you can put thirds and 9ths in your chords and still hear the notes. When I used a pedal with a Hiwatt 100 I couldn't do that, the notes oscillated off beat and generally sounded nasty.

For single note lead lines any kind of distortion can work though

Well it's March so pedals obviously. Now if you we're to ask me in June..........
I tend to go in cycles you see, but having said that, like our winters, the pedals season seems to last longer each year.

Easier set-up at gigs for me getting dirt from pedals as I can just go guitar - board - amp and not worry about the extra cabling needed to put modulation/delay/reverb in the FX loop.

I seem to be more of a pedals into a clean amp kind of player...despite all my favourite players usually being amp dirt players. Everytime I use my DSL on its drive channel I think its good...but kind of raw. Sounds better to my ears with a bad monkey in front on top of its dirty channel...or just pedals into the clean channel. The AC30 sounds awesome cranked and I do love that sound...but for me to get that at band volumes means attenuator! But the problem with that is the volume differential say from guitar rolled back a bit to a nice crunchy rhythm tone to wide open for lead means there isn't a great difference in the volumes for solos...which in a 2 guitar band can be a problem. So if I run it clean have my OD pedals set for a nice rhythm tone..then boost it more for lead i can get a great hike in volume and be heard over the top of the other noisy bugger in my band. It works well...and sounds great to my ears.

The other guy in my band has just got the TSL601 after struggling with his DSL401 for a while..and that sounded and worked great on last thurs nights rehearsal...had his clean, crunch levels sorted and set the lead channel to stun on a much louderer level..and it did a stellar job. I was thinking of getting the TSL122 recently..and still may do! But I can do more or less the same with my DSL...clean channel boost button on for a ACDC ish crunch. And a bad monkey in front of it for more...and still have my lead channel set to stupid loud for solos. Hmmm so many options.
