    Default New Clapton Album

A bit meh, in my opinion.
I know he's getting older and all that, but it reminds me very much of his
70s output, just a bit dull.

No surprises there then. I'll always have a bit of a soft spot for him as the early stuff is so good, and I heard a lot of him growing up via my dads records.

Last album of original songs and tour I saw him on was Pilgrim, I gave up after that.

You bought a Clapton album and expected it to not be dull?

Exactly. When you wear Armani, there are only so many ways to pretend you have the blues...and none of them are particularly convincing.

    Harsh!

Live he just goes through the motions now, but his blues playing ... certainly on album ... is still right up there with the best. Certainly not gone off the boil like so many "greats have".

I think the only player of his era that hasn't "gone off the boil "has to be Jeff Beck , never resting on his laurels and still playing with that almost falling off the tightrope dare and panache.

Have to agree with that 100% about Jeff, never fails to knock me off my feet.

Was at the Clapton/Beck gig at the O2 and the only time Clapton REALLY played was when Jeff joined him on stage and then he sort of woke up and showed what he can do. Lot of mutual respect, clearly.

It's a shame, the Cream reunion in 2005 (?) really reminded me what EC CAN do when he's enjoying himself.

I've certainly noticed that as well. When I've seen him live (not for a while) the best bits were when the support act came back at the end to jam (Bonnie Raitt was excellent).

The DVD of the Stevie Winwood gigs looks great as well, I think Eric needs to be spured along by other players to get the best out of him.

This, in my experience, applies to the majority of songwriters who start off in bands and then go solo.

Without a competitor or even a band to feed off you and give you that chemistry, you're just never as good again.
