Clapton was da bomb in Cream. Never been a fan of his solo stuff. I think the album title here says it all.

Haven't heard the new album yet so can't comment. I love EC, I really does, but most of the output from the 70s onwards is indeed a bit meh - save for the proper acoustic blues stuff.

But then I listen to Cream. The tone, the phrasing, the bloody tone!!! Legendary.

Not heard it yet, but love EC. His previous studio album was great. 'Autumn Leaves' was genuinely moving - the sound of a man getting old(er). I think comparisons of his later stuff to Cream/John Mayall, etc miss the point. EC is 68 in a couple of weeks. I would not expect him to sound like he did when he was in his 20s. Beck has probably always been more cutting edge - but if I were only able to listen to one guitar player for the rest of my days, it would be Eric. One of my favourite EC solos is his one-note-for-twelve-whole-bars heart-breaker on 'Holy Mother' form August. When it comes down to it, some players make the hairs on the back of your neck stand up; some don't. For me, EC does. Long may he continue.

It should have been called Old cock .. it's pants. Luckily I listened to it on Spotify rather than parting with any cash.
