    The HT range shouldn't be too far out of budget actually. My bandmate got his HT100, which is the biggest one they do, for £360. They do 20 and 50 watt heads, though I've no idea what they go for. They sound good through V30s, I used to have a HT60 2x12 combo but recorded it a few times through a Mesa 2x12 V30 cab and was happy with the results.

    The HT range has a lot of features for the price, but in theory you'll need to take it to a Blackstar tech to replace power valves because they don't supply schematics. Worth a look anyway, but not sure if they'll come in under budget.

    Surely another option (though I've never tried this) is an Electro Harmonix 44 Magnum paired with a preamp style pedal, like a HT Dual? http://www.ehx.com/products/44-magnum

    That sounds pretty good! Muchos impressed. I wonder if they do a more powerful one... Dirty chords are not as 'smooth' as valve, but that's being picky...
