Controversey Music & Prince You Tube covers!

Recently I got into a bit of trouble on You Tube for posting a cover of Prince's Purple Rain. To be honest it's more about guitar wankery than it is about the song! I thought it would be covered under the fair use policy but was unsure on my legal stance. I e mailed the claimant stating I'm happy for it to be removed if I was doing a bit of copyright infringement, however! I believe it was covered under fair use on the basis of criticism and education. I should also state at this point that it's not 'note for note' - certainly the three minute solo! Anyway, they ignored my communication and I was left in a situation where I had lost my work and the claimant wasn't interested. I wanted my video back so I was left with no choice but to put in a copyright counter notification through You Tube which seemed quite daunting as there are many tick box's saying it will start a legal ball rolling blah blah blah blah. I did a lot of reading on the fair use policy in recent weeks!
Anyway! Controversy music weren't interested as they also ignored You Tube's communication so I got my video back today which I'm quite obviously happy about!
The reason for this thread is I had seen other threads/posts via google in regards to loads of people losing their work because Controversy music taking a shotgun approach to removing anything Prince based off You Tube! It's not about the views (I don't have many), I just like to monitor my progress by viewing historical videos!
tl;dr
Lost Prince cover off you tube, got it back as I believe it's 'fair use' and took the leap putting a counter notification as Controversy music ignored my out of You Tube communications.

Although I don't want this to be a shameless plug of my channel and by all means feel free not to watch it. I just want to help other You Tubers out as I felt really stuck and apparently this happens a lot with Prince covers! It may help those if they saw the content in mine!

I don't quite understand how you 'lost' the video. Didn't you make it, then upload it to youtube?
If you want to upload some of your covers to Youtube, you really need to choose an artist who isn't touchy about having unlicensed material of theirs out in the interwebworld.

Just to clarify: Was any of Prince's original recording used? For example, were you just playing guitar along to the CD of Purple Rain?
Correct! I sort of assumed if no original parts are used then I would get away with it. I'm not even a fan of Prince, it's just a nice set of chords to wank over!

No problem.
No, it's a pretty convincing backing track created by someone else that could probably have a crack at doing me over on a copyright issue - although maybe another grey area under 'fair use'. There isn't any 'Prince' material on the track (like a CD playing in the background whilst I play). It;s all me, my note choices, my tone choices, no lyrics and someone else's backing track obtained through a free backing tracks website.
there's loads of price covers on youtube though? It makes no sense I tells thee!
