    Default local jam night

OK, should I pluck up the courage to have a look at our local jam night, tonight? I shan't take my guitar, I don't think, but providing I'm not too exhausted when I get home, I might wander over and check it out.

I've not been brave enough to do it before, but this is probably as much about going in on my own as anything else!

I should at least check it out though...I'll try to be brave [/blog]

    Clare,

Go for it. Jam nights are not the big scary things people make them out to be. Guitarists are pretty friendly folks.
Im bad to the bone. Just like Jesse, no Sid James

Do it, and take your guitar. The geeks will be nice I promise.

I went...I took the guitar.......it stayed in the car

I stayed and listened for a bit, had a chat with a couple of the guys there. And I realised that I know absolutely nothing about jamming with other people!

And it was a bit like a youth club - it had been taken over by teenagers! Emo-teenagers at that

I may, one day, be brave enough to take the guitar inside, but I think I might practice with backing tracks first!

It probably isn't the only jam night around the area. Find the one that suits you. Or get a stupid haircut and learn something by Elbow.

    T'was their loss.

I'm a bit lazy to look to far afield

I may go back and have another look sometime, or I could dye my hair black and practice my Kevin the Teenager impression - its probably not always like that. There were some good young players jamming there - a young bassist who had me completely transfixed, for instance

Playing with other musicians is a world apart to playing by yourself. But keep up the courage and try again! Don't forget - if you get into it and perform, you can shape the jam your way (a bit!)

Thanks, I will try to maintain the courage! I'm hoping to meet with another guitarist from 'Forming Bands', and he's been speaking to a singer too, so there are possible other options in the pipeline.

I have both been a legend and a moron at my local jam do.

The hero bit is self-explanatory. Nailed everything and looked cool doing it.

The knob-end bit however...............Playing the chorus in some poxy Oasis number the drummer didn't stop when I expected him too. That totally threw me off and I had NO IDEA what was coming next. Absolutely clueless. So I just played the same chord for ages until I figured it out and then away we went.

Was late on though and everyone was fucked so we were still considered legends. We all went home shortly afterwards!

Just get up and do it! However, I would advise laying with backing tracks as much as possible because if you turn up unprepared the knock-back/embarrasment will maybe deter you from going back. Which isn't really the point!
