I'm a little dismayed that there's hardly a song listed here that isn't thirty plus years old. While it's a good feeling to get up and shred to something that you know inside-out there's no harm in going out on a limb occasionally, like putting a twist on a contemporary number. A buddy of mine used to run a jam night - he was in an indie / punkish kind of outfit and a lot of the people who showed up (audience and performers) were young and into a diverse range of tunes. One week a kid with a battered no-name electric sloped onto the stage and launched into Placebo's "Pure Morning". The rest of the ensemble cottoned on pretty quick and the result was awesome. The following tune was probly a Christina Aguilera hack-up to showcase a great girl singer. Sure, there's the odd bum note but it's a jam night, not a tribute band, innit?

I finally got up the nerve at my local jam night. I bucked the trend for hey joe and sweet home Alabama and did Snow Patrol- all i have and chasing cars and then a combo of the who and limp bizkit -behind blue eyes. Next week I'm hoping i'll be ready to do rockstar. I'm only a novice and singing and playing takes me ages to learn anything.
