    Question Stasis... does it work?

    Hi there,

I've loaded a new track onto mp3unsigned this evening. It's called Stasis and is an attempt at a loose sci-fi soundscape. It has a "structure" but no discernable tune (deliberate!). However I'm finding it impossible to be objective about it - much more so than other tracks, and this is definitely not representative of our style.

Grateful for any comments. Is it interesting? Does it get something across? Does it conjure up an image? I have no idea!

This is a very interesting song ...

It definitely gives of that space theme! How did you manage to make a track like this it is very unusual. It is not my favourite type of music as it is very slow, have you considered speeding it up?

    Cheers,

    Theuof,

I like this a lot. Very reflective and moody. I think you pegged it nicely calling it part soundscape and part scifi score.

Please do tell some details of your creative process - DAW, synths, influences/inspiration

Hi there, thanks for the interest and feedback!

I use the ancient Cubase VST, which drives me up the wall sometimes. For this track, which is a real departure for me, I had a vague mental picture of drifting through space and used that as a starting point - slightly doomy, occasionally scary, lots of space and depth, things going past etc. I was less sure about the sounds but played about until I had a pool of things to start building a structure. The deep pad is from ZebraCM, Triple Cheese supplies the occasional delayed alarm-type sound, a very old DS404 patch called Hellotron fades in at about 1:00, filtered white noise with an automated chopper comes in around 2:29 and the final thin synth stabs are from Alien Artifact. And the "tune" is mostly a glass harmonica from Garritan Personal Orchestra overlaid with a patch from Zebra 2. Pretty much the rest of it comprises various mangled samples that have been given away with Computer Music. I knew it needed to avoid sounding like a bunch of interesting noises shoved together - and it was that bit I wasn't sure about. Unlike working on a "proper" piece of music or a song I found it far harder to tell when it was done. If you listen to any of our other tracks on mp3unsigned.com you'll realise just how different this one is!

    Thanks again for the interest.
